The Best of South Florida’s Beaches: Our Handpicked Favorites

There’s something magical about Florida’s coastline—whether it’s the salty breeze rolling off the Atlantic or the calm, glassy waters of the Gulf. We've spent countless weekends chasing sunrises, barefoot walks, and beachside bites, exploring this endlessly diverse shoreline. And after all that sandy research, we’re ready to share our personal favorites.

These aren’t just pretty places—they’re experiences. Each beach has its own personality: some are quiet and wild, others buzzing with life. Some are made for lounging, others for exploring or partying. From nature preserves to powder-soft sandbars, here’s our lovingly curated guide to the best beaches in Florida—tried, tested, and (most of them) family-approved.

Two Coasts, Two Personalities

South Florida’s coasts have distinct personalities. On the east, the Atlantic offers lively waves, rougher sand and THE bit city—perfect for those who love a bit of surf and energy. The west coast, by contrast, charms with calm Gulf waters and silky, powder-soft sand made for slow strolls and laid-back afternoons.

🌴 South Beach, Miami

Few beaches in the world match the energy of South Beach. With its iconic Art Deco buildings, thumping beach clubs, and a steady stream of beautiful people cruising the boardwalk, it’s the ultimate place to see and be seen. The Atlantic waves roll in with just the right amount of excitement, and the wide sandy stretch offers plenty of space to spread out—if you don’t mind sharing it with hundreds of others doing the same. You’re never more than a few sandy steps from a juice bar, a boutique hotel, or a plate of ceviche. Whether you’re dancing at Nikki Beach or strolling down Ocean Drive with an ice cream in hand, South Beach pulses with life.

Perfect for:
Those who thrive in high-energy environments. If you love buzzing beach bars, live DJs, chic rooftop cocktails, or just really good people-watching, this is your spot. Great for couples, groups of friends, and stylish weekenders who want their beach day with a side of luxury and nightlife.

🏖️ Siesta Key

Siesta Key’s sand is the kind of sand that sticks in your memory—powdery, white, and cool to the touch, even under the midday sun. It's almost otherworldly. This beach is massive and well-equipped, with amenities like showers, lifeguards, and shaded picnic areas. The Gulf waters here are warm and calm, perfect for kids to splash around or for a long, lazy float. But what really makes Siesta Key special is its proximity to Sarasota’s charming downtown. You can spend the morning soaking in sun and saltwater, and the evening wandering through galleries or dining al fresco with live music. It’s a seamless blend of beach bliss and cultural charm.

Perfect for:
Families with kids, couples looking for a blend of beach and city life, and anyone who appreciates walkability. Great for longer stays where you want both sun and things to do.

🌅 Anna Maria Island

This barrier island on the Gulf Coast feels like a throwback to simpler times. No towering condos, no chain restaurants, just pastel-colored cottages, local seafood shacks, a local coffee and ice cream shop and a sense that time moves a little slower here. The beaches are pristine and uncrowded, with sugar-fine sand and calm, shallow waters. You'll often find dolphins playing just offshore or pelicans gliding overhead. After a day of sun and swimming, you can stroll barefoot from the beach to a waterfront restaurant for a grouper sandwich and a sunset view. Bikes and golf carts are everywhere on this island, so ditch your car for a few days. It’s not flashy—but that’s the beauty of it.

Perfect for:
Travelers looking to unplug. Ideal for families with young kids, couples escaping for a romantic weekend, or anyone who values peace, character, and casual charm over resort glitz.

SPOILER ALERT - this is our very favorite little island for a slow family getaway. Why? It's unique, authentic and gorgeous. Something different than the big resort towers that line so much of South Florida's coast.

🌊 Marco Island

Marco Island blends the comfort of upscale resort life with the natural beauty of the Gulf. The beaches here are incredibly wide—you’ll walk across a sea of soft white sand before you even reach the water. Many parts of the beach are lined with luxury condos and resorts, making it easy to pop in for a drink or a fresh towel. The sunsets are truly magical here—fiery skies reflected in smooth, glassy water. You won’t find as much quirky charm as in smaller beach towns, but if you want a stress-free vacation with great service, comfortable accommodations, and breathtaking views, Marco delivers.

Perfect for:
Couples and families looking for an effortless, comfortable escape. Great for travelers who enjoy amenities, clean beaches, and everything within reach—without the chaos.

🐚 Sanibel Island

Sanibel isn’t just a beach—it’s an experience. Famous for its seashells, Sanibel draws collectors from all over the world hoping to find that perfect conch, tulip shell, or sand dollar. The beaches here are long, wide, and more rustic than resort-style. There are bike paths everywhere, nature preserves to explore, and a lovely, laid-back community vibe. What it doesn’t have: beachfront bars, restaurants, or a buzzing nightlife (even though there is Bimini Shack waiting for you as you leave the island - don't miss it!!). And that’s kind of the point. Come for the shells, stay for the sense of stillness that so many beaches have lost.

Perfect for:
Shell seekers, nature enthusiasts, and those who don’t mind packing a picnic for a more unplugged experience. Ideal for early risers, photographers, and families who love exploring.

🌿 John D Mac Arthur Beach State Park

Tucked away from the glitz of South Florida’s coast, John D. MacArthur Beach State Park is one of those rare places where nature still leads the show. The entrance alone sets the tone—a wooden boardwalk stretches over a mangrove forest before opening up to a wide, untouched beach. No loud beach bars here. Just sea oats, sand dunes, and the sound of waves crashing. There’s a peacefulness to this place that’s hard to find elsewhere on the coast. And while you won’t find restaurants or shops, you will find trails, kayaks, a nature center, and the space to truly unwind. It’s a place to listen to the wind, watch the birds, and reconnect with the wild side of Florida.

Perfect for:
Nature lovers, birders, hikers, and anyone who wants to swap the crowds for calm. Ideal for families looking to disconnect, couples on a quiet retreat, or solo travelers seeking peace and inspiration.
