La Fortuna Off the Beaten Path: Hiking Mirador El Silencio

This lush trail winds through dense rainforest, perfect for spotting birds and soaking in the jungle sounds. 

🟡 Moderate – Some elevation and rugged areas.

⏱️ Approx. 1–1.5 hours
A more adventurous route into deeper forest, with chances to spot more elusive wildlife. 

 🟡 Moderate to 🔴 Challenging – Rocky terrain, uneven surfaces.

Cross ancient lava fields and be rewarded with breathtaking volcano views. Best attempted with sturdy shoes and some hiking experience. This is definitely the highlight of the preserve!

🟢 Easy – Short and relatively smooth.

A quiet trail ideal for a slower pace and less foot traffic. Good for a relaxing jungle stroll. 

 Walking across the hardened lava flow is a surreal experience—sharp volcanic rock beneath your boots, Arenal’s perfect cone rising above, and rainforest reclaiming the landscape around you.

It’s dramatic, atmospheric, and one of the most rewarding viewpoints in La Fortuna.

One of the best aspects of this reserve is flexibility. You can combine trails to create a short 1-hour walk, a half-day jungle adventure or a full exploration of all 14 km. Just know that elevation is not shown clearly on maps—so choose wisely and check the weather before heading out.

This is a place where wildlife still thrives on its own terms. Though sightings are never guaranteed, that’s part of what makes it so special. Keep your eyes peeled for howler monkeys swinging through the treetops, coatimundis scurrying across the trail, and flashes of color from tropical birds. You might also come across lizards, frogs, or even a sleepy sloth tucked into the canopy if you're (very) lucky.

What you will definitely see is incredible views of the volcano from its base and a chance to walk across hardened lava fields—remnants of the powerful 1968 eruption that reshaped this landscape.

 Wear proper hiking shoes or boots—trails can be muddy and uneven. We also recommend you wear a hat in case you hike some of the less shaded trails.

Bring plenty of water, snacks and insect repellent, especially during the rainy season. And don't forget your rain jacket if you go during rainy season.
