La Fortuna is one of those places where nature shows off a little. Towering rainforest, the iconic Arenal Volcano, and—perhaps most magically—natural hot springs heated by the earth itself. These thermal waters are one of the highlights of any visit to the region, and there’s something for everyone, from luxury spa seekers to barefoot adventurers. If you're planning a visit, here’s what you should know to make the most of your soak.
The Arenal Volcano is the reason these springs exist. Though it’s currently dormant, the geothermal energy beneath it still runs strong, heating underground rivers that flow into the region’s many hot springs. These mineral-rich waters are known for their healing properties and soothing warmth—perfect after or in between long days of hiking, zip-lining, or exploring the jungle. For us, this was definitely one of the highlights of our trip. Don't miss it!
There’s no one way to experience the hot springs. Depending on your vibe (and budget), here are your top choices:
1. Tabacón Thermal Resort & Spa (Day Pass Option)
If you’re looking for the ultimate hot springs experience, Tabacón is hard to beat. It's the most well-known and luxurious of the La Fortuna hot springs, with beautifully landscaped gardens, waterfalls, and several pools of varying temperatures. You won't even know how the day passed in here. Before you know it, you are floating amongst low glowing lights in one of the pools. A day pass gives you access for the day and includes meals depending on the option you choose. You can pay directly on-site, but we recommend booking it in advance just in case they are at capacity.
What to expect: Towel service, changing rooms, lockers, swim-up bar, and dining options. It’s a perfect day in a luxurious, yet natural environment.
Good for: Couples, families, and anyone wanting to treat themselves.
2. EcoTermales, El Choyin, and Other Mid-Range Springs
Places like EcoTermales, Baldi, Paradise Hot Springs, and El Choyin offer a great balance of atmosphere and affordability. These are much smaller and left more to it's natural state than Tabacón, but still offer easy entry points into the springs and facilities. El Choyin, in particular, is popular with locals and travelers alike for its access to facilites (think restrooms) and budget-friendly rates.
What to expect: smaller section of the springs, restaurant and facilities, more rustic, but still the same relaxing water to float in.
Good for: Families, friend groups, or anyone wanting a simple warm soak without the splurge.
3. Free Hot Springs (Rio Chollin / Tabacóncito)
Yes, you can experience hot springs in La Fortuna without spending a dime. Just across the road from the Tabacón Resort, you’ll find a public access point to the same river that flows through the resort—warm, natural, and open to everyone.
What to expect: No changing rooms, no lockers, and likely some locals with coolers and music. It’s rustic, more of a floating river than pools and a little slippery, so don't forget your water shoes!!
Good for: Adventurers, budget travelers, or anyone curious about how the locals do it.
Whether you're treating yourself to the luxury of Tabacón or slipping into the river like the locals do, La Fortuna’s hot springs are a must-experience. There’s something grounding about soaking in volcanic warmth, surrounded by lush greenery and the hum of the rainforest. It’s more than just a soak—it’s a slow moment in the middle of adventure. And trust me, your muscles (and mind) will thank you.
