Flavorful Journeys
The hot springs here are heated by a volcano. That alone should be enough. But with kids in tow, you need to know which ones are actually worth the money, which ones are too crowded, and where the free option is hiding. We’ve done them all.

Arenal Volcano is currently dormant, but the geothermal energy beneath it runs as strong as ever. Underground rivers heated by that volcanic activity surface throughout the La Fortuna area — channeled into landscaped resort gardens, managed day-spa pools, and wild roadside rivers where locals gather at dusk. Here’s how each option stacks up when you’re traveling with kids.
LUXURY PICK
Tabacón is the gold standard — and it earns the title. The thermal gardens are beautifully landscaped with cascading waterfalls, rivers snaking through tropical plants, and multiple pools ranging from warm to very hot. The whole complex is designed so you can drift from one pool to the next without ever feeling like you’re at a water park.
For families, the wide shallow pools are ideal for younger children — the water moves slowly, temperatures are gentle, and there’s always a shaded spot nearby. Older kids love the stronger cascade waterfalls that function as natural pressure-jet back massagers. Day passes are available and include a meal depending on the package you choose. Book in advance — prices at the gate are higher, and popular session times do sell out.
Family verdict: The best overall experience if budget allows. Stunning setting, great variety of pools, from shallow pools for little ones to waterfalls, and enough variety to spend a full day (or two).
Quiet & Curated
EcoTermales is the anti-Tabacón in the best possible way. The capacity is strictly capped per session — usually around 100 guests maximum — which means you’ll never feel crowded, even in high season when every other spring in La Fortuna is packed. The pools are beautifully maintained, the landscaping is lush without being overdone, and the whole atmosphere is genuinely peaceful.
Eight thermal pools with temperatures ranging from 32°C to 41°C, plus cold water pools for contrast. It’s particularly good for families who find the Tabacón experience overwhelming or who want a calmer environment for younger kids. The dinner package here is one of the best-value meals in the La Fortuna area.
Family verdict: Best choice for families who prioritize calm over spectacle. Excellent for younger kids who get overstimulated in larger resort settings.
MOST FUN FOR KIDS
If your kids are old enough to appreciate a water park vibe — and most of them will — Baldi is the one. It has the largest number of thermal pools in the area (25+), multiple water slides, swim-up bars for adults, and enough activity that children will genuinely not want to leave. It’s not the most refined experience, but it’s the most fun.
The thermal pools range from lukewarm to very hot, so there’s something comfortable at every age. The slides are the big draw for kids 6 and up. The complex is large enough that even when busy, each section doesn’t feel impossibly crowded. It’s the most affordable of the main paid options, and the all-inclusive package is good value for a family spending most of the day there.
Family verdict: Best for active families with kids who want more than just soaking. Not the most atmospheric, but reliably fun.
MID-RANGE
Two solid mid-range options that often fly under the radar. Paradise Hot Springs has a beautiful garden setting and a more adults-oriented atmosphere, though families are welcome. El Choyin is smaller and more local in feel — less tourist infrastructure but genuinely warm water and a relaxed vibe. Both are good fallback options if Tabacón and EcoTermales are sold out during peak season.
LIVE LIKE A LOCAL · FREE OPTION
Here’s the secret most travel blogs don’t tell you clearly: there are completely free hot springs in La Fortuna, and they are the same geothermal river that flows through Tabacón Resort.
Rio Chollin — known locally as Tabacóncito — sits just across the road from the Tabacón entrance. It’s a public access point to the thermal river: no gates, no fee, no facilities. Local families gather here in the evenings, the water is genuinely warm, and the experience is as real as anything you’ll pay $80 for a hundred meters away. There are no changing rooms or showers, no paved or manicured trails leading to the river, so come prepared. It’s fun and authentic, but not the breathtaking scenery and surroundings of its luxury sibling at Tabacón , but for families happy to go rustic for an afternoon, it’s a genuinely memorable experience.
Family verdict: A fantastic experience for those wanting a local, real hot springs experience and are happy without all the buzz around.
The right hot spring depends on what kind of experience your family is after. Here’s the short version.
The most beautiful setting in La Fortuna. Multiple pools, cascading waterfalls, volcano views, and shallow areas perfect for young children. Worth the price if your budget allows it.
25+ pools, water slides, and a full-day family atmosphere. The most fun option for kids who want activities beyond just soaking. More affordable than Tabacón for a family of four.
Strictly capped at 100 guests. Never crowded. Eight beautiful pools in a peaceful garden setting. The right choice when you want the hot springs experience without the resort chaos.
Everything you need to plan your hot springs day — timing, booking, and what to bring.
ONCE IN A LIFETIME
There’s a moment in the early evening when you’re floating in warm water, the sun dipping behind the trees and the magic of Tabacón comes to life. It’s one of those images you carry for life.
A NATURAL BACK MASSAGE
The kids discovered that if you stand under the cascade waterfall it functions as a full-pressure back massage. Twenty minutes later we couldn’t get them to leave.
A PERFECT MORNING
There’s a moment in the early morning when you’re floating in warm water and the sun breaks through the cloud gap, against the blue sky. The jungle comes to life around you.
LIVE LIKE THE LOCALS
Nature at its best. Finding your way through the rocks and boulders into the river, bathing with locals – simply a real, authentic and rustic experience of how parts of this river have been enjoyed for ages.
A HOT-SPRING WATERPARK
We didn’t expect to love Baldi — it felt like a step down from Tabacón. But watching the kids queue up for the slides for three hours straight, we admitted it might have been their favourite day of the whole trip.
RAIN RAIN DON'T GO AWAY
Afternoon rain in La Fortuna is common. Getting caught in a warm downpour while already in the thermal pools is not a problem. It’s one of the most unexpectedly magical experiences of the whole trip.

For families, Baldi is the most fun option — 25+ pools and water slides for active kids. Tabacón is hands down the most beautiful and magical experience. Plus it has perfect shallow pools for toddlers and young children. EcoTermales is best for families who want calm over entertainment, with a strict guest cap that keeps it uncrowded. All three welcome children of all ages.
Yes — Rio Chollin (also called Tabacóncito) is a free public access point to the same geothermal river that flows through the Tabacón Resort. It's located directly across the road from the Tabacón entrance. No facilities, no fee. Bring your own towels and be prepared to change in your car. Locals gather there most evenings.
Adult day passes at Tabacón typically run $60–$100 depending on the package, with meals included in higher tiers. Children under 12 are at a reduced rate and under 4 are often free. A family of four should budget $200–$300 for a full day with the meal package. If you stay at their hotel, it's free. Book online in advance — gate prices are higher.
Tabacón is larger, more dramatic, more magical and has more pools and waterfalls — the full resort experience. EcoTermales is smaller, capped at ~100 guests per session, and significantly quieter. Tabacón wins on setting and variety; EcoTermales wins on peacefulness and intimacy.
Arrive at opening — typically 9am or 10am. Bus groups from San José arrive around midday and the gardens fill up quickly. The early morning is the most peaceful time, and it's when Arenal Volcano is most likely to be clear before daily cloud cover builds. You also get better photos before the crowds arrive.
