Flavorful Journeys
We’ve done both. One ended an overnight flight with kids feeling like a victory. The other added four hours of highway and a very unhappy seven-year-old. The answer isn’t complicated — but it does depend on where you’re going first.
LIR BEST FOR
Beaches 20–60 min away, La Fortuna 2.5–3 hrs
SJO BEST FOR
Manuel Antonio, Caribbean, Monteverde
LA FORTUNA FROM EITHER
LIR drive smoother; SJO more mountainous
PRO TIP
Open-jaw routing avoids backtracking
Here’s the honest short answer: if your trip centers on Guanacaste’s beaches, fly into Liberia (LIR) — you’ll be at the coast in under an hour. If you’re combining Northern Costa Rica with the south (Manuel Antonio, the Caribbean, Monteverde) or want the most international connections, San José (SJO) makes more sense. For La Fortuna alone, either works — it’s roughly 2.5–3 hours from both. And if you’re doing Guanacaste and La Fortuna, the smartest move is usually open‑jaw: in one airport, out the other. Here’s how the options compare for families.
| DESTINATION | FROM LIR | FROM SJO | BEST AIRPORT |
|---|---|---|---|
| Guanacaste Beaches (Hermosa, Panamá) | 20-40 min | 4-5 hrs | LIR |
| Playa Conchal / Flamingo | 45-75 min | 4.5-5 hrs | LIR |
| Rincón de la Vieja National Park | 35-60 min | 4 hrs | LIR |
| Río Celeste / Tenorio Volcano | 1.5 hrs | 3.5-4 hrs | LIR |
| La Fortuna & Arenal Volcano | 2.5-3 hrs | 2.5 hrs | EITHER |
| Monteverde Cloud Forest | 2.5 – 3 hrs | 3 hrs | EITHER |
| Manuel Antonio National Park | 4.5-5 hrs | 2.5-3 hrs | SJO |
| Caribbean Coast (Puerto Viejo) | 6-6.5 hrs | 4-5 hrs | SJO |
| Corcovado / Osa Peninsula | 6+ hrs + flight | 4 hrs + flight | SJO |
Landing at LIR feels like exhaling. The airport is small, warm, and calm — a welcome contrast to the stress of a long international flight with children. Baggage claim is quick, immigration lines are short compared to SJO, and the exit puts you directly into the warm Pacific air. You’ll have a rental car and be on the road in under an hour from landing on most days.
LIR handles direct flights from major US hubs including Miami, New York, Houston, Atlanta, and Chicago. Check routes seasonally — service expands in high season (December–April). If you can’t find a direct flight to LIR, a connecting flight through SJO with a domestic leg or short drive north is still often worth it for a Guanacaste-heavy itinerary.
San José’s Juan Santamaría International Airport is a full international hub. Arrival is more complex — longer immigration queues, busier baggage claim, and a congested urban setting that means slower progress once you’re on the road. That said, SJO has the most international connections and offers direct access to Costa Rica’s central valley, cloud forests, and the Pacific south coast. For longer, multi-destination trips that combine Northern and Southern Costa Rica, it’s often the right starting point.
Smart strategy: If your itinerary moves from Guanacaste → La Fortuna → San José (or vice versa), consider an open-jaw routing: fly into LIR and out of SJO (or the reverse). You follow the natural route without backtracking, and the logistics are seamless. Many families find this is the single best planning decision they made.
This is the most common planning question — and the answer is refreshingly simple: both airports work equally well for La Fortuna. The drive is approximately 2.5–3 hours from either airport. The difference is the terrain: the drive from LIR is smoother with fewer mountain curves, which matters if anyone in your group is prone to motion sickness. The drive from SJO is more mountainous and scenic, but slower and often busier with traffic through urban areas.
If La Fortuna is your only destination, the answer to which of Costa Rica’s International Airports is better depends on flight price and availability. If La Fortuna is part of a broader Northern Costa Rica trip that includes Guanacaste, LIR makes more sense. For hot springs recommendations in La Fortuna, see our guide to the best hot springs.
CLOSE TO AIRPORT
Reliable, convenient, and close. Best for practical overnight stays between connections or at the end of a trip before an early departure.
15-20 min from SJO
Spacious, quiet grounds in a colonial-style hacienda. Excellent for families — generous pool, good dining, and a calm start or end to a busy trip.
BOUTIQUE, 20 - 30 MIN FROM LIR
Relaxed luxury directly on the beach. Boutique, wildlife-rich setting on the Papagayo Peninsula. Worth planning 2–3 nights around, not just a layover stop.
DIRECTLY ACROSS THE STREET
The only true airport hotel near LIR. Practical for late arrivals and early departures. Not a vacation destination, but exactly right when you need it.
ULTIMATE LUXURY, 50 MIN FROM LIR
The ultimate luxury option. Worth every minute of the extra drive. Two golf courses, multiple pools, and the kind of service that makes you forget the rest of the world exists
HIDDEN GEM NEAR LIR
A lovely little coffee shop just across from the airport — perfect if you need a good coffee, the perfect latte or fresh smoothie while waiting for your rental car or before a flight. Check their hours before heading over.
RULE 1
Four to five extra hours of driving on arrival day is too high a price for any flight savings. LIR puts you on the beach hours after you land.
RULE 2
A $50 cheaper flight into SJO that costs you a full day of driving and exhausted kids is not actually cheaper. Plan your airport around where you’re going first.
RULE 3
In/out of different airports eliminates backtracking on Northern Costa Rica routes. LIR in, SJO out (or vice versa) is often the most logical routing for a Guanacaste + La Fortuna trip.
We’d heard it was a small airport, but we underestimated what that means after an overnight flight with children. Immigration took 30 minutes. Baggage was already there. The rental car desk was two minutes away. We were driving north in under an hour. That start to the trip set the entire tone.
We flew LIR in, SJO out, and followed a natural arc: Guanacaste → La Fortuna → San José. No doubling back, no long drive on the last day with luggage. We’d do this every time. Search open-jaw when you book — the difference in effort versus a round trip is significant.
We spent two nights at the Mangrove on our way out. We almost didn’t — it felt like an unnecessary add-on. Instead, it became some of the best family time of the trip. The wildlife on property, the calm beach, the feeling of total relaxation after weeks of active travel. Don’t treat LIR area hotels as just logistics stops.

Fly into LIR (Liberia Airport) for Guanacaste — without question. Most Guanacaste beaches are just 20–60 minutes from LIR. Flying into San José instead would add 4–5 hours of driving on your arrival day, which is exhausting for families after a long flight.
Both LIR and SJO work for La Fortuna — each is roughly a 2.5–3 hour drive. If La Fortuna is paired with Guanacaste, fly into LIR. If it's paired with Manuel Antonio or the south, SJO is better. The LIR drive has fewer mountain curves, which matters for motion-sensitive travelers.
LIR is significantly smaller and calmer than San José's Juan Santamaría International Airport (SJO). LIR has fewer gates, shorter lines, and a relaxed atmosphere — ideal after a long travel day with children. Although it can get busy over holidays or school breaks. SJO is a full international hub with more connections but more crowds and complexity.
The Hilton Garden Inn Liberia Airport is directly across the street — the only true airport hotel. For nicer stays, El Mangroove (beach luxury, ~20–30 min) and Andaz Papagayo (wildlife-rich resort, ~40 min) are excellent family options worth building a few nights around. The Four Seasons Costa Rica (~50 min) is the ultimate splurge.
Yes — and this is often the smartest strategy for Northern Costa Rica. Flying into LIR and out of SJO (or vice versa) lets you follow a natural route without backtracking. Search for open-jaw flights — this is a common routing and often priced similarly to a round trip.
