Booking & Logistics
- Book in Advance Night tours fill quickly in high season (Dec–Apr). Book at least 1–2 days ahead. Most operators have online booking. Groups of 8 or fewer are common — don’t assume availability.
- Departure Times Most tours depart between 5:30pm–7pm. Darkness falls around 6pm year-round. The tour runs for approximately 2 hours.
- Transport Many operators offer hotel pickup in La Fortuna town. Confirm this when booking — some properties further from town are not covered.
- Weather Tours run in rain. Arenal receives rainfall year-round and a shower during the walk can happen. The forest in light rain is arguably more atmospheric, not less. Bring the rain jacket and go.
- Cost Expect $25–$50 per person for a guided night tour. Specialist tours (frog-focused, small-group premium) run higher. Children under 5 often go free or at a significant discount.
What to Bring
- Headlamp Bring your own even if the operator provides one. A dedicated headlamp for each child keeps them from sharing and reduces the chances of anyone walking in the dark unaided.
- Footwear Closed-toe shoes minimum. Rubber boots preferred — the trail can be muddy after rain. Many operators rent rubber boots on-site if you don’t have them.
- Clothing Long trousers and long-sleeved top — essential for mosquito protection after dark in the rainforest. A light fleece for children — temperature drops noticeably after sunset in the Arenal zone.
- Insect Repellent DEET or picaridin — apply generously before setting out. Evening is peak mosquito activity in the rainforest. Don’t rely on the operator to have this.
- Phone / Camera Night photography of frogs requires a macro lens or a phone with a good portrait/macro mode. The guides’ torches provide enough light for close-up shots if you’re within 50cm of the subject.

THE FIRST RED-EYED TREE FROG
The guide stopped, crouched, held the torch low, and pointed to a leaf. A frog the size of a child’s thumb, perfectly still, with eyes that seemed to be lit from inside. Nobody said anything for a full thirty seconds. Then everyone said everything at once.

When the guide switched off the main torch for a moment, the darkness was complete — absolute, velvety, soundtracked by frogs and insects. The kids stood completely still. It’s a form of silence and darkness that almost no one in urban life ever experiences.
THE WORK NEVER STOPS
THE LEAF-CUTTER ANT HIGHWAY AT NIGHT
At maximum colony activity, the ant highway crossing the path was wider than our hands. The guide pointed the torch and the kids watched — transfixed — as thousands of ants moved in perfect formation, each carrying a leaf fragment above their heads. No nature documentary has ever captured what it looks like in person.

Most people see them as spots far above in the trees. We didn’t. Slowly moving from one tree to the next, the sloth crossed our path right in front of us just a few arm’s lengths away. The kids talked about it all the way back to the hotel.
